Authorized fire

Use of licensed fire to force the renewal of pastures and other agricultural practices.

Fire is a part of the set of agricultural techniques applied in Brazil. It is used especially by farmers to clear land for crops or to force pasture recovery during droughts. The frequent use of fires, however, impoverishes the soil, demanding that the cultivated areas be left in rest (fallow) for a more vigorous recovery of vegetation. Every fire must be authorized by public agencies and must take place in a controlled manner so that it does not get out of control.
