ICMBio – Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation
ICMBio (Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation) is an autarchy linked to the Ministry of Environment responsible for actions related to the National System of Conservation Units.
Established in August 2007, ICMBio (Chico Mendes Institute
for Biodiversity Conservation) is a federal agency linked to the Ministry of the Environment. It protects part of the natural heritage and promotes sustainable socio-environmental development with actions related to expansion, maintenance, and structuring of the National System of Conservation Units (Law 9.985/2000). The agency took on attributions that were previously exclusive to Ibama. ICMBio is responsible for proposing, implementing, managing, protecting, inspecting, and monitoring the Conservation Units (UCs) instituted by the Union, fostering and carrying out research, protection, preservation, and biodiversity conservation programs, as well also exercising police power to protect UCs. ICMBio was born from a provisional measure enacted when Marina Silva headed the Ministry of the Environment, and its name pays homage to rubber tapper Chico Mendes, murdered in 1988 in retaliation for his defense of the Amazon and its populations.
