History of Deforestation

Series of deforestation rates recorded over time by official and unofficial satellite monitoring systems.

Collection of generally annual rates of native vegetation suppression that are reported over time by official and unofficial satellite monitoring systems, which make up deforestation histories for the different Brazilian biomes. One of the longest-lasting tools is PRODES (Monitoring the Deforestation of the Brazilian Amazon Forest by Satellite), coordinated by INPE (National Institute for Space Research) and supported by the Ministry of the Environment and the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA). This initiative consolidates the loss of native vegetation in the Legal Amazon since 1988, which already totals 457,237 km2 in this period.
