Deforestation Alert

A warning generated by satellite monitoring systems indicating the possible loss of native vegetation in a defined territory.

Brazil has ten satellite image monitoring systems, including Deter/Inpe, SAD/Imazon and GLAD/University of Maryland, which issue monthly, weekly or daily alerts when they detect changes in native vegetation coverage. Each detection of natural flora loss in a given territory generates an alert. Its focus is to quickly identify a deforestation event, proving that an area was affected by the loss of its native vegetation. Although they may be less precise in quantifying the size of the area that has been deforested, they are essential to guide planning and environmental inspection actions or to monitor commitments to reduce deforestation in production and commercial chains.
