Conama – National Environment Council

Consultative and deliberative group established in 1981 as part of the National Environment System with representatives of federal, state, and municipal public agencies, the private sector, and civil society.
Conama (National Environment Council) is a consultative and deliberative group that has been a part of Sisnama (National Environmental System) since 1981. It is composed of representatives from federal, state, and municipal public agencies, the private sector, and civil society. Their work is advised by a plenary, and advisory, technical, and workgroups. Its presidency and executive secretariat are the responsibility of the Ministry of Environment. Its political jurisdiction includes: establishing norms and criteria for environmental licensing; commissioning studies on the environmental impacts of public or private projects and possible alternatives to them; and establishing national norms and standards for the control of pollution caused by motor vehicles, aircraft, and vessels.
