Forest fire scar

Plot of land in which the vegetation was totally or partially eliminated by the action of fire.

Forest fire scars are areas that lost all or part of their vegetation by fire, be it criminal or authorized by public agencies. DETER (Real-Time Deforestation Detection System in the Legal Amazon) generates alerts for clear-cutting and degradation of forests and other forms of native vegetation in that region nearly every day, which includes the scarring left behind by forest fires. The sum of these alerts and data generated by other satellite monitoring systems helps to prove and generate totals for the annual rates of suppression and degradation of native vegetation in the Amazon and other biomes.

Synonyms:

forest fire patch, burned area
