Rural settlement

A set of properties in a rural area delimited by the federal or state government for agrarian reform purposes.

Rural settlements are a set of rural lots recognized and implemented by the federal or state government over a territory where previously there was only one rural property owned by a single owner or landgrabber. The measure serves the agrarian reform by settling families without economic or social conditions to acquire and maintain a rural property. Benefited workers need to live and earn their livelihood from the land. To do so, they should receive support, including financial credit, technical assistance and infrastructure development. Settlers must pay for the land transferred to them and for the any hired credit. In addition to sharing land with those in need, the agrarian reform settlements foster housing development and family agriculture, as well as promoting food security in rural areas. Brazil has more than 9,400 settlements where nearly 1 million families live. The annual fee and budget for settlements shrinks each year, and land reform has been stalled by Jair Bolsonaro’s government, hurting families across the country.
