Rural Environmental Registry (CAR)
Mandatory electronic registration based on self-declaration and aimed at environmental regularization of rural properties across the country. The public registry created by the New Forest Code (Law 12.651/2012) is mandatory for rural properties across the country and serves to integrate environmental information on rural properties in one database, including the situation of permanent preservation areas (APPs), legal reserves (RLs), and other remnants of native vegetation, as well as productive areas. Registration is a step towards the environmental normalization of rural properties and allows for monitoring, inspection, deforestation reduction actions, and restoration of natural vegetation as required by law, as well as environmental and economic planning of properties. CAR implementation is coordinated by the Brazilian Forest Service (SFB) but is carried out at the state level. The CAR is self-declared, and undergoes a process of validation and adherence to the PRA (Environmental Normalization Program).
