Gross deforestation

Amount of native vegetation that was removed from a given area, without discounting its natural or induced regeneration.

Gross deforestation accounts for direct losses of native vegetation without discounting the natural or induced recovery of forests and other types of vegetation common to Brazilian biomes. Gross deforestation is characterized as being carried out by clear cut and its annual assessment in the Legal Amazon is carried out by INPE’s Prodes (Amazon Deforestation Monitoring Program) and measured in annual official deforestation rates.

Synonyms:

gross deforestation, simple deforestation, gross suppression or conversion of native vegetation (more suitable terms for natural fields and other non-forest formations), annual rates.
