Atlantic Forest Atlas
Annual mapping project carried out by Fundação SOS Mata Atlântica and INPE on the loss and regeneration of native vegetation in the Atlantic Forest.Since the 1980s, partners Fundação SOS Mata Atlântica and INPE (National Institute for Space Research) have been mapping the remnants and regeneration of the Atlantic Forest in the 17 states and 3,429 municipalities covered by the biome. The Atlantic Forest has been eliminated for urbanization and farming since Portuguese colonization. Less than 13% of its original vegetation remains today. The efforts of the entities contribute to environmental management and the improvement of legislation and public policies aimed at the conservation and recovery of natural flora, as well as for the protection of water, biodiversity, and marine environments associated with the biome. The Atlas supported the construction of the Atlantic Forest Law, the only national legislation of its kind focused on a large natural region, and the commitment of state governments to zero deforestation and the expansion of native vegetation cover.
