Soybean Moratorium
An agreement aimed at curbing the sale of soy produced in deforested areas in the Amazon.
Starting from a Greenpeace campaign, the trade agreement seeks to stop buyers and exporters from selling soy grown on land that was deforested in the Amazon. It initially counted lands that were deforested after 2006, but in 2013, the rule was relaxed to 2008, aligning the moratorium with forest legislation published in 2012. After a series of renovations, in 2016, the pact between civil entities and the private sector became permanent. According to a study by the University of California (USA), one of its main results was to reduce deforestation associated with soy in the Amazon from 30% to less than 1.5% between 2006 and 2016. Lack of transparency in data and attempted fraud, however, compromise the initiative, as pointed out by NGOs and journalistic investigations. An initiative similar to the soy moratorium in the Amazon is sought by NGOs for the Cerrado as well.
