Deforestation

Total elimination of native vegetation in a given area followed, in general, by occupation with another coverage or land use

The term refers to complete elimination of native vegetation, and is usually associated with clearing trees and forests. It also affects other natural formations in all biomes, including grasslands, mangroves and savannas. It can occur in primary or secondary vegetation, be criminal or authorized by federal, state and/or, in limited cases, municipal public bodies.

Synonyms:

deforestation, suppression or conversion of native vegetation (more suitable terms for natural fields and other non-forest formations).
