Embargoed areas

Regions that suffered environmental damage and are under administrative sanction applied by one or more environmental agencies until their recovery.

Water and soil pollution, criminal hunting, unauthorized deforestation and other illegal activities cause damage that, in most cases, will not be remedied only with the application of environmental violations or fines. As the law ensures the protection and restoration of natural environments and conditions, environmental agencies can embargo areas for a certain period until they reach a minimum level recovery of their natural conditions. During the embargo, there is a restriction on the activities that can be carried out in the area. For instance, in the embargo of an area for illegal deforestation, it cannot be used for agricultural production. Most of the embargoes applied in the country are made by Ibama and ICMBio, which have an online consultation system, but measures can also be taken by state and municipal bodies.
